On a winter night in 1950, Private First Class Arthur A. Clifton disappeared into the frozen chaos of the Chosin Reservoir.

Thousands of miles and decades earlier, in the cold air over Germany in 1944, Staff Sergeant Yuen Hop’s final mission ended in fire and wreckage.

For their families, those dates became the start of a silence that lasted lifetimes — years without answers, years of wondering if anyone still remembered. But in the past year, through a marriage of tenacious human effort and the quiet precision of modern science, both men have finally come home.

The Frozen Chosin

Clifton’s unit, the 31st Regimental Combat Team, fought in one of the Korean War’s most harrowing engagements — the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. Surrounded by Chinese forces and battered by temperatures dropping to -30°F, many soldiers never made it out. For decades, Clifton was listed as Missing in Action.

In 2024, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) matched DNA from recovered remains to Clifton’s family. The science behind it — mitochondrial DNA analysis, cross-referenced with anthropological study — meant that even after 74 years, the frozen battlefield still had stories to tell.

When Clifton’s flag-draped casket arrived in Texas, it wasn’t just a military funeral. It was the final chapter of a family’s search.

The Long Flight Home

Yuen Hop’s story begins in the Bay Area, where he grew up the son of Chinese immigrants. In 1944, as a waist gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress, he flew missions over occupied Europe. On November 21, his crew was assigned to bomb the industrial center of Merseburg, Germany — a target ringed by anti-aircraft guns.

The B-17 was hit. Witnesses saw it break apart near Bingen, Germany. Eight crew members were never identified; Hop was among them. His sister, then in her early teens, received the telegram that would define her family’s wartime memory.

Hop’s remains were buried in an American cemetery in Europe as “Unknown.” There they lay for nearly 80 years until DPAA historians began reviewing archival documents, German records, and wartime burial reports. The trail led them to remains that matched Hop’s age, build, and dental records. DNA testing with living relatives confirmed what the paper trail had suggested: Staff Sergeant Yuen Hop had been found.

In early 2025, his remains returned to California. His sister, now 93, met him at the airport.

The Science of Coming Home

Both Clifton’s and Hop’s returns are the result of patient, methodical work. The DPAA — operating out of laboratories in Hawaii and Nebraska — uses an arsenal of modern tools to identify the missing:

• DNA Analysis — Especially mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down through the maternal line and can be matched with distant relatives.

• Forensic Anthropology — Studying skeletal features to estimate age, stature, and other characteristics.

• Dental Comparisons — Matching old dental charts with recovered remains.

• Archival Research — Reconstructing combat events from unit diaries, maps, and foreign records to locate probable loss sites.

This blend of science and detective work means that even remains buried for decades — or scattered across crash sites — can still yield a name. Each case can take years, but the momentum is growing. DPAA now identifies over 200 service members annually, a number unthinkable in earlier decades.

Why It Matters

For the families, identification isn’t just a military formality — it’s an emotional release. As Clifton’s sister and Hop’s sister stood beside their caskets, both women were reclaiming something that had been suspended in time.

Closure doesn’t erase loss, but it transforms it. The “missing” status, with its endless questions, becomes a defined story. There’s a grave to visit, a place to lay flowers, a way to speak their names without the ache of uncertainty.

For the broader veteran community, these returns are reminders of a promise kept: You Are Not Forgotten. That phrase, printed on the black-and-white POW/MIA flag, is not just a slogan but an ongoing mission and a promise.

The Unfinished Work

There are still more than 81,000 Americans missing from past conflicts:

• WWII: ~72,000

• Korean War: ~7,500

• Vietnam War: ~1,500

• Cold War and later conflicts: smaller numbers, but still families waiting.

Each number represents not only a service member but a circle of loved ones who live with unanswered questions. Advances in DNA sequencing, international cooperation, and underwater recovery are steadily reducing those numbers — but the work will likely continue for generations.

Carrying the Story Forward

POW/MIA Recognition Day, observed this year on September 19, is a moment to honor those still unaccounted for and those who have finally come home. It’s also a chance to reflect on how remembrance is evolving.

In Clifton’s Texas hometown and Hop’s Bay Area neighborhood, their returns are already part of local memory — stories seen on local TV, passed in kitchens and community halls. The science may be new, but the welcome home is timeless.

As we look to the future, it’s worth remembering that these identifications aren’t just about the past. They are about reaffirming a national commitment: no matter how many decades have passed, no matter how far the search must go, we will not stop until every possible name is spoken, every family has an answer, and every hero is brought home.

Memorial Day is not a celebration. It’s not the start of summer, or a day for sales and slogans. It’s a day of mourning. A day to reckon with sacrifice—not abstractly, but specifically. It's about lives lost in service. Names etched in stone. Families whose tables will never be full again.

I’ve spent time listening to veterans, reading their stories, and trying to understand what this day means to them. One thing is clear: it is not their day. Veterans Day is. Memorial Day belongs to the fallen—and to those who carry their memory.

And those carriers aren’t just fellow service members. They’re the moms and dads, the kids, the best friends, the partners who go on living with the echo of someone who’s gone. They are civilians too.

This year, instead of barbecue plans, I’m thinking about how to hold space. How to slow down enough to remember someone I never met. How to honor them without pretending I understand the full cost. Maybe that looks like reading a name on a gravestone. Maybe it means supporting a Gold Star family. Maybe it’s just pausing the noise.

What I do know is that it’s not about performative patriotism. It’s about presence. It’s about respect. It’s about asking better questions—Who are we remembering? What did they leave behind? How do we keep their memory from fading into a blur of bunting and hashtags?

The Birth of a Beacon

In 1942, at the height of World War II, Voice of America began its first broadcast with the voice of William Harlan Hale. It was born out of necessity—an answer to the Nazi propaganda machine and the dire need for accurate, reliable information during the war. With its first broadcast in German, VOA aimed to reach the hearts and minds of those suffering under totalitarian regimes. The goal was not only to provide the truth but to offer an alternative to the distorted, enemy-controlled narratives that were keeping people in the dark.

A Soldier's Lifeline

As the years went on, VOA’s reach expanded, and its importance to U.S. soldiers stationed overseas became undeniable. In World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, VOA’s broadcasts served as a source of both morale and information. For soldiers far from home, hearing news from America—whether it was updates on the war, messages of support from their families, or entertainment programming—was a vital connection to the world they were fighting for. VOA’s broadcasts helped them understand the broader context of the conflict, kept them grounded, and reminded them that they were not alone.

VOA’s impact on soldiers during these wars cannot be overstated. Amid the isolation and strain of wartime, its broadcasts became a constant reminder of home, offering everything from music to sports updates, alongside its crucial role in informing the public of military developments. More than just a news outlet, it became a source of comfort and solidarity for those stationed in foreign lands.

Standing Against Censorship

As the Cold War set in, VOA became an even more pivotal force on the global stage. Throughout Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, the United States sought to counter the Communist propaganda that was pervasive across the Iron Curtain. VOA’s broadcasts in Russian, Polish, and other languages targeted populations living under the Soviet regime. In this ideological battle, VOA’s commitment to truth and transparency was a revolutionary act.

During the Cold War, VOA was often a rare source of unfiltered news, challenging the narratives being spun by oppressive governments. Its role in providing news to the people behind the Iron Curtain was vital—not only for soldiers but for civilians who were otherwise isolated from the truth.

In 1984, Ronald Reagan said, “The Voice of America has been a strong voice for the truth. Despite problems of antiquated equipment and Soviet jamming, the Voice of America has been able to extend its message of truth around the world…”

It was a fight not with weapons, but with words, and VOA stood firm in its mission to offer hope, knowledge, and a better understanding of the world outside the walls of censorship.

The Digital Age and Evolving Legacy

As the world entered the digital age, VOA adapted to the times. While shortwave radio broadcasts continued to serve those in remote or restrictive regions, the growth of the internet and social media provided new ways for VOA to connect with audiences around the world. Its website and digital platforms expanded, offering on-demand news, analysis, and stories in multiple languages. It became an essential tool in the fight for press freedom, particularly in countries where media outlets were tightly controlled.

The Signal Fades

In 2025, after more than eight decades of steady transmission, the airwaves of Voice of America went silent. The end came not with ceremony, but with a quiet cutoff—an executive order that shuttered the U.S. Agency for Global Media and, with it, one of the longest-running voices in international broadcasting.

For generations, VOA stood as a companion to soldiers, a comfort to prisoners of war, and a spark of truth in places where truth was dangerous. From its wartime roots in 1942 to its final broadcasts, it carried news, music, reassurance, and the steady reminder that someone, somewhere, was listening and speaking back.

Though the radio transmissions have stopped, the website remains online—for now—archiving decades of stories, features, and the echoes of what once was. An ongoing legal battle has left a flicker of uncertainty about what the future holds, but the microphones have fallen quiet.

It’s been a while since I posted here on Preserving Valor, and I wanted to check in with a quick update — and a heartfelt thank-you.

When I launched this project, my mission wasn’t just to tell stories — it was to help preserve them. The Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress was (and still is) the driving force behind everything I do here. Their goal is to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations can learn from their experiences. Preserving Valor was meant to complement that mission — a more public-facing platform for veterans who were open to sharing their stories more broadly.

In recent months, I’ve stepped back from publishing new posts, largely because I haven’t had any new veterans interested in doing interviews. And without new conversations to share, it felt a little off to keep publishing reflections or historical content without the core — the voices of the veterans themselves.

But I haven’t walked away from this work, and I don’t plan to.

Going forward, I’ll be posting again, just not as frequently. You can expect thoughtful stories, reflections, and background that still serve the larger goal: supporting the Veterans History Project and honoring the legacy of those who’ve served. And if you know a veteran who wants to share their story — publicly or privately — I’d love to help guide them through that process.

The American Indian Code Talkers are often celebrated as unsung heroes whose intricate language was instrumental in turning the tide of World War II. Their story, classified for more than two decades after World War II, is far richer than a mere recounting of their battlefield exploits. To truly honor their complex legacy, we must delve into the depths of their personal journeys, military experiences, and the challenges they faced upon returning home.

Incredible Effectiveness

From Hungarian-speaking people serving with Ukraine in their present-day war with Russia, to the Choctaw code talkers in World War I, the use of Indigenous and little-known languages to quickly slip messages past opponents have been employed by militaries since radio communication was developed.

The United States made especially effective use of Native American languages, which were unique, unwritten, and virtually unknown anywhere else in the world. After code talkers were used effectively in WWI, both Germany and Japan sent students to the U.S. to study the languages before WWII. However, the effort was unsuccessful due to the myriad Native American dialects and difficulty in learning them. The Navajo Code developed for WWII still holds the distinction of being the only spoken military code that was never broken.

The Navajo Code Talkers were a unique force within the United States military. These young men (the first 29 ranged in age from 15 to 35, the eldest and youngest both lying about their age to enlist) underwent rigorous training that combined military drills with the development of a complex code based on their native tongue.

Early in WWII, Major General Clayton B. Vogel of the U.S. Marines met with a civil engineer named Philip Johnson and witnessed a demonstration of Navajo Code Talkers transmitting a three-line, coded message in 20 seconds; something that would have taken the machines of the time 30 minutes! Vogel recommended the Marines recruit 200 Navajo, but only a pilot project of 30 men was approved at first. One dropped out.

Eventually, the U.S. Marines alone would employ 461 Navajo Code Talkers in WWII.

More Than Just Warriors

Imagine leaving behind everything familiar to embark on a perilous journey into the unknown, the only certainty being violent confrontation with an aggressive nation, on behalf of another nation that hasn’t shown your people much respect. This was the reality for the brave men of the code talkers.

While their linguistic skills were invaluable, it's essential to remember that they were also husbands, sons, and brothers who experienced the same fears and anxieties as any other soldier. They endured the rigors of basic training, forged bonds with fellow soldiers, and undoubtedly faced instances of prejudice and discrimination. Yet, they persevered, their commitment to the safety of their home and their people driving them forward.

Ironically, many of these linguistic heroes hailed from boarding schools where speaking their native Navajo was strictly forbidden. These institutions, designed to assimilate Native Americans into mainstream culture, failed to destroy a language that would prove invaluable to the war effort.

Chester Nez was about 21 years old when the United States joined WWII. He kept his decision to enlist in the Marines from his family and was one of the first 29 Navajos who formed Recruit Training Platoon 382 in May of 1942. Together, they created the code that would be used across the Pacific Theater of war.

During the first two days of the Battle of Iwo Jima, six Navajo Code Talkers sent and received over 800 messages without a single error. The messages they delivered were credited with saving hundreds of lives.

The battlefront was a crucible that tested their courage and resilience. From the intense fighting on Iwo Jima to the grueling campaign on Okinawa, the Navajo Code Talkers were at the heart of the action. Their ability to transmit critical information swiftly and securely proved to be a game-changer.

While code talkers weren’t as widely deployed in the European Theater of WWII, a group of 17 Comanche men were recruited to make a code to outwit Nazi forces.

Charles Joyce Chibitty served as a Comanche Code Talker during the Battle of Normandy. He and 12 other code talkers landed at Utah Beach on D-Day and their efforts saved the lives of thousands.

Chibitty and other Comanche Code Talkers were named Knights of the National Order of Merit by the French government in 1989.

Returning Home: The Unsung Chapter

Code talkers, despite their invaluable contributions to the war effort, faced a myriad of challenges upon returning to their civilian lives and communities.

Many returned to impoverished reservations with limited economic opportunities. The transition from the relative stability of the military to the harsh realities of reservation life was difficult. Discrimination persisted, limiting their access to education, employment, and even voting rights.

Like many veterans, the code talkers struggled with the psychological aftermath of war. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety were common. Reintegration into a community that had changed in their absence could be isolating. Many found it difficult to reconnect with their pre-war lives.

The secrecy surrounding their wartime role added another layer of isolation. The military asked them to stay silent about their role in service, in case they were needed again in the future. They refrained from sharing their experiences with loved ones, further compounding the emotional toll. Their heroic role in the war wasn’t declassified until 1968.

Despite the adversities they encountered, the legacy of the code talkers is one of courage, resilience, and unwavering patriotism. Their story is a testament to the human spirit and the enduring power of culture.

From Bondage to Battlefield

Formed in 1866 just as the scars of the Civil War began to heal, the Buffalo Soldiers were a unique experiment. Six all-Black regiments, later condensed into four – the 9th and 10th Cavalry, and the 24th and 25th Infantry – were established by an act of Congress. These regiments, nicknamed "Buffalo Soldiers" by the Native American tribes they fought due to their hair resembling buffalo fur or the bison coats they sometimes wore, became integral to westward expansion.

The Buffalo Soldiers weren't simply warriors. They served as the guardians of the West, protecting settlers from dangers that lurked in the vast unknown. They built crucial infrastructure like forts and roads, forging a path for civilization across the unforgiving landscape, all while facing prejudice from those they protected. Their service wasn't limited to combat; they were instrumental in shaping the early years of America's National Parks. Buffalo Soldiers served as some of the first park rangers in Yosemite and Sequoia, safeguarding wildlife and ensuring responsible land use.

A Legacy of Segregation and Struggle

Despite their dedication and bravery, the Buffalo Soldiers served in segregated units until the Korean War. Opportunities for promotion were limited, and their pay was lower compared to white soldiers. This segregation wasn't just on the battlefield; it permeated every aspect of their lives. They faced discrimination in the towns where they were stationed, sometimes even violence. As veterans, they often struggled to access healthcare and benefits readily available to white veterans.

The story of the Buffalo Soldiers is a complex one, marked by both valor and struggle. They were more than just soldiers; they were frontiersmen, protectors, and conservationists who helped shape the American West. By acknowledging the challenges they faced alongside their remarkable accomplishments, we gain a deeper appreciation for their role in shaping American history. Their fight for equality extended beyond the battlefield, paving the way for future generations to strive for a more just society.

July 28 marks National Buffalo Soldiers Day, a day to commemorate the legacy of these brave African American soldiers who helped shape American history.

In the winter of 1950, United Nations forces, including a large contingent of American Marines, pushed north in Korea with the aim of unifying the peninsula. Little did they know they were about to be encircled by a massive Chinese army near the Chosin Reservoir. What followed was a desperate fight for survival in some of the most brutal conditions imaginable.

Temperatures plunged to 30 degrees below zero, turning men and machines into brittle statues. Marines huddled together for warmth, their weapons seizing up, their rations turning to rock. Medical supplies froze, and batteries in Jeeps and radios quickly ran down in the bitter cold. For more than two weeks, they fought a desperate withdrawal, clawing their way south under constant attack.

The Chosin Reservoir Campaign was a tactical withdrawal, but at a heavy cost. Over 13,000 American casualties were suffered, many from frostbite and exposure. The veterans who emerged from the Chosin Reservoir carried not just physical scars, but the invisible wounds of war. Exposure to the extreme cold has led to a unique set of health challenges for these veterans, with statistics painting a stark picture:

• Lifelong struggle: According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, a staggering 80% of Chosin Reservoir survivors experience chronic pain and numbness in their extremities.

• Increased risk of cancer: The VA reports that veterans with severe cold injuries are at a 20% greater risk of developing skin cancer, particularly in areas with prior frostbite.

• Arthritis and nerve damage: The extreme cold can damage nerves and joints, leading to arthritis and loss of mobility. Studies suggest a higher prevalence of these issues among Chosin Reservoir veterans compared to other Korean War veterans.

The Chosin Reservoir serves as a potent reminder of the sacrifices made during the Korean War. As we remember the "Forgotten War," let us not forget the extraordinary resilience of the men who fought in the frozen hell of the Chosin Reservoir, and the unique challenges they continue to face. These veterans deserve our recognition, our support, and access to the healthcare they need to manage the lingering effects of that brutal winter.

National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day is observed each year on July 27 to to remember the troops who fought, were wounded, taken prisoner, or killed in the Korean War.

The image of a veteran returning home is often romanticized – a hero welcomed with open arms, seamlessly transitioning back into civilian life. But the reality can be far harsher. Veterans face a multitude of challenges, from readjusting to a slower pace to grappling with unseen mental scars.

This is where American businesses have a unique opportunity – to bridge the gap between service and civilian life. Hiring veterans right out of the military isn't just about bolstering your workforce with skilled individuals, it's about supporting their mental health and overall well-being. It's a win-win for both parties, a sentiment echoed in recent years through legislative efforts and social movements.

The recent passage of the Honoring Our PACT Act acknowledges the long-term health effects of exposure to toxins like burn pits during deployments. This is a crucial step in ensuring veterans receive the healthcare they deserve. But alongside medical care, meaningful employment is another pillar of a successful reintegration.

Veterans bring a wealth of experience to the table, honed in the crucible of military service. Their strong work ethic, instilled through rigorous training, is a valuable asset to any company. They are adept at teamwork, having operated within a structured yet adaptable hierarchy. They possess exceptional leadership skills, having overseen teams and made crucial decisions under pressure.

These are just the tip of the iceberg. Veterans often have specialized technical skills acquired through military training programs. Additionally, their strong sense of discipline and commitment make them reliable and dedicated employees.

The Healing Power of Purpose: Beyond Just a Job

But the benefits of hiring veterans extend far beyond their skillsets. Stepping into a civilian job after military service can be a powerful tool for healing and mental well-being.

Imagine a soldier who has spent years deployed in a combat zone, facing constant danger and uncertainty. Their days were filled with a specific purpose – to protect their country and their fellow soldiers. Returning to civilian life can leave a void, a sense of purposelessness that can exacerbate existing mental health challenges like PTSD or anxiety.

Here's where a job offer becomes more than just a paycheck. It becomes a lifeline. A new position provides veterans with a much-needed sense of structure and routine. The act of working towards a goal, of feeling productive and valued, fosters self-confidence and a renewed sense of identity.

The social connections formed at work are equally important. Veterans often develop deep bonds with their military comrades. Entering a new environment can leave them feeling isolated. A supportive work environment filled with understanding colleagues can provide a sense of belonging and camaraderie, easing the transition back to civilian life.

Studies have shown a strong correlation between veteran employment and positive mental health outcomes. A 2020 study by the RAND Corporation found that employed veterans reported lower rates of depression and suicidal ideation compared to unemployed veterans. The same study highlighted the importance of not just any job, but a job that utilizes a veteran's skills and offers opportunities for growth.

Building a Supportive Bridge

In order to encourage employers to consider hiring veterans, July 25 has been designated as National Hire A Veteran Day.

By offering meaningful employment opportunities to veterans transitioning out of uniform, businesses aren't just filling positions, they are actively contributing to a veteran's mental well-being and successful reintegration into society. It's a chance to bridge the gap between the battlefield and the boardroom, creating a win-win for businesses and for the brave men and women who served their country.

The success of the thirteen colonies against a mighty empire inspired revolutions in France, Haiti, and throughout Latin America, all echoing the cries of “liberty, equality, and self-government.” The sacrifices of the American veterans, the citizen-soldiers who dared to defy an empire, became a powerful symbol of resistance for the oppressed. The American experiment in democracy became a model of the power of the people.

However, the ideals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence – self-evident truths like equality – were far from universally applied in the young nation. While the American Revolution challenged the idea of monarchy, it did not dismantle all hierarchies. Many minorities, including African Americans and Native Americans, remained disenfranchised. Women, the very backbone of society, were denied the right to vote.

The fight for a more perfect union continued. The Civil War, a bloody conflict over slavery, was a necessary step towards true equality. The veterans of this struggle fought for what they believed in, paving the way for a more unified nation. The long arc of the Civil Rights Movement, stretching well into the 20th century, further chipped away at the edifice of discrimination.

Despite its imperfections, the American experiment has endured. The core ideals – democracy, individual liberty, and the rule of law – remain a powerful beacon. The United States continues to inspire revolutions, not just violent ones, but revolutions of ideas and social progress. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the Arab Spring, the echoes of the American Revolution can be heard.

The story of America is a work in progress, a constant striving towards the ideals set forth in 1776. The fight for a more perfect union, for true equality for all, is a journey, not a destination. It's this ongoing pursuit that keeps the American Revolution relevant, a testament to the enduring power of those revolutionary ideals.

The thunderous cannons of Yorktown had fallen silent. On October 19, 1781, after a decisive siege led by General George Washington and aided by French forces, British General Cornwallis surrendered his army. This pivotal moment marked the end of major fighting in the American Revolution. But the fight for a new nation wasn't over. The colonists now had the daunting task of building a government structure to embody the ideals of liberty and self-rule they had declared their right to just a few years prior. The birth of the United States government wasn't a singular event, but a series of crucial steps that took place over the course of years. The first major act was the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This document, written by Thomas Jefferson, served as the philosophical foundation for the new nation. It enshrined ideas like liberty, equality, and the right to self-government, justifying the colonists' rebellion against British rule.

However, the colonies needed a way to function during the war. The Articles of Confederation, established a loose national government. This initial attempt had limitations. It created a weak central authority with most power residing in individual states. This made addressing national issues like defense and trade cumbersome. Additionally, the Articles lacked an executive branch, leaving the nation without a single leader, and representation in the national legislature was based on each state having one vote, regardless of population. This frustrated larger states.

Recognizing these weaknesses, delegates met in Philadelphia in 1787 to revise the Articles. Their discussions took a dramatic turn, leading them to create a whole new document: the Constitution of 1789. This process involved heated debates and compromises. The most significant compromise, often called the Great Compromise, addressed representation in the national legislature. It established a bicameral system: the Senate with equal representation for each state and the House of Representatives based on population. It also set forth that enslaved inhabitants of the states, for purposes of calculating population, counted as three-fifths of a person. This compromise was enacted to balance the power between smaller and larger, Northern and Southern states.

The newly crafted Constitution outlined the structure of the government, but some worried it gave too much power to the federal government and didn't protect individual liberties. The Bill of Rights, ratified in 1791, addressed these concerns. These first ten amendments to the Constitution guaranteed basic rights like freedom of speech, religion, and assembly. It also established a system of checks and balances, where each branch of government could limit the power of the others, preventing any one branch from becoming too powerful.

This process, from revolution to the creation of a balanced republic, ensured a government that would reflect the will of the people while safeguarding their fundamental rights. It wasn't a perfect document, but it provided a framework for a nation that continues to evolve today.

The simmering tensions between the colonies and Great Britain finally erupted in gunfire on April 19, 1775. The night before, Paul Revere, along with William Dawes and Samuel Prescott, embarked on the now-famous midnight ride, a desperate attempt to warn colonists of the approaching British troops. This act of courage, immortalized (though inaccurately) in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, marked the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. At dawn, about 700 British troops reached Lexington Green and encountered a force of around 80 militia.

The exact sequence of events remains murky, but shots were fired, leaving eight colonists dead. Thus sparked the first battle of the American Revolution, later immortalized in poetry by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The British continued to Concord, splitting into smaller groups to search. But search as they might, they couldn’t find the weapons cache they were tasked with confiscating. The colonists had known for weeks about the British plan to seize their weapons, and had moved them to other locations. Frustration mounted, and the British were faced with growing colonial resistance as more militia arrived from neighboring towns. Their search completed unsuccessfully, the British began their march back to Boston.

The colonists, alerted by riders and the sound of gunshots, saw their numbers swell as more Minutemen arrived from neighboring towns. They wouldn’t let the British march away from Concord unchallenged after killing their fellow colonists. Chasing the retreating army, they took advantage of the terrain. They adopted guerilla tactics learned in the French and Indian War, firing from behind stone walls and houses, inflicting heavy casualties on the British until they reached the safety of Charlestown. This fighting style would become a hallmark of the American Revolution.

Even Earl Percy, the British leader who rescued the British forces by riding out with 1,000 more troops to protect their retreat, recognized the value in the new tactic, and the importance of their experience fighting in this terrain:

Older veterans were also involved. When Earl Percy left Boston, he didn’t take spare ammunition wagons for his men or cannons. Once he left, another British commander directed two ammunition wagons to follow him under guard. However, these wagons were intercepted by a small party of older veterans. They had not joined the militia companies because they were all over 60 years old. The senior militia men ambushed and attempted to hold up the ammunition wagons. When the British army regulars ignored them, they opened fire, killing the lead horses, two sergeants, and wounding the lead officer. The survivors ran or surrendered.

Word of the "shot heard around the world" reached Philadelphia, and in May, the Second Continental Congress convened. Delegates from the thirteen colonies gathered, determined to present a united front against British aggression. One of their most crucial decisions was the establishment of the Continental Army. George Washington, a respected Virginia planter with experience from fighting the French and Indian War, was chosen to lead this relatively unorganized group of volunteers.

The war stretched across eight long years, with crucial battles fought from the frozen north to the sweltering south. General Nathanael Greene, a skilled strategist, displayed remarkable resilience leading the Continental Army in the grueling Southern Campaign. He used layered defenses and strategic retreats to exhaust the enemy army.

Ordinary soldiers distinguished themselves as well; William Jasper was offered a lieutenant’s commission after heroically recovering and raising the flag of the half-completed Fort Moultrie during a day-long British navy attack. He turned down the commission because he couldn’t read or write, but was given a roving commission instead. He was later wounded in battle and died clutching his regiment’s standard.

Deborah Sampson was a woman who disguised herself as a man to fight alongside her fellow patriots and endure the hardships of war alongside her male counterparts.

James Lafayette, an enslaved Black American, earned a legislative emancipation for his service as a double-agent. Posing as a runaway slave, he fed false information to the British while providing accurate information to the Americans.

Daniel Morgan, a teamster-turned-rifleman, trained snipers and led daring raids that helped turn the tide and outraged the British.

Behind the battles, the Continental Congress faced a constant struggle to finance the war effort. Soldiers needed weapons, ammunition, food, shelter, and uniforms. Printing money led to inflation, and securing taxes from individual colonies proved difficult. Haym Salomon, a Polish immigrant and financier, not only acted as a spy within the British navy while being held prisoner, but provided crucial financial support to the Continental Army during its darkest hours. These loans provided vital funds for military supplies, salaries, and crucial support for the war effort. In fact, the final blow to the British general Charles Cornwallis at Yorktown could not have been struck without Salomon’s assistance in paying for the food and supplies necessary to the operation. Without him, the American army would not have marched.

The American Revolution is more than just battles and Founding Fathers. It's a story of ordinary citizens rising to the challenge, exemplified by the countless sacrifices they made. Their legacy is the very foundation of the United States, a nation built on ideals of liberty, self-government, and the pursuit of a more perfect union. These ideals continue to inspire and challenge us today.

Firebrand leaders like Samuel Adams, a fiery organizer, and John Adams, a skilled lawyer, recognized this burning resentment. These men weren't veterans themselves, but they understood the power veterans wielded. They channeled the veterans' anger into calls for colonial unity, leveraging their experiences and grievances to rally support for the revolutionary cause.

Meanwhile, a new voice emerged to shake the very foundations of British authority. Thomas Paine, a recent arrival from England, published his electrifying pamphlet, Common Sense. In clear, concise prose, Paine laid out a powerful argument for independence. Veterans, many of whom had likely struggled to understand complex political theories, found his message refreshingly direct. Here was a man speaking their language, echoing their yearning for self-determination. "Common Sense" became a runaway bestseller, its arguments resonating deeply with those who had bled for their communities and yearned for a government that truly represented them.

“Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions.”

But fiery words and persuasive pamphlets wouldn't suffice. Acts of defiance were needed to demonstrate the colonists' resolve. In 1773, the now-legendary Boston Tea Party erupted. While the exact identities of the participants remain shrouded in mystery, it's likely that veterans played a role in this audacious act of rebellion.

Their experience with weaponry and their willingness to take risks made them valuable assets in such an operation. The Intolerable Acts, Britain's heavy-handed response to the Tea Party, only served to further alienate the colonists. These punitive measures backfired spectacularly, solidifying the colonists' resolve and pushing them closer to the brink of revolution.

In the face of escalating tensions, veterans once again took center stage. Local militias, comprised in part of men hardened by the French and Indian War, began drilling with renewed fervor. These Minutemen, as they were known, were ready to answer the call at a moment's notice. Their experience in combat proved invaluable, making them a formidable force despite lacking formal military training.

The need for a unified colonial response became increasingly clear. In 1774, the First Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia. Delegates from across the colonies, many with military backgrounds themselves, gathered to discuss their grievances and chart a course forward. Veterans' voices were now part of the conversation, their firsthand accounts of British injustices fueling the fire of resistance.

The fight for independence was no longer just a simmering discontent; it was a wellspring of determination. Veterans, forged in the crucible of past conflicts, became the backbone of this growing resistance. Their experiences, their courage, and their unwavering commitment to liberty would shape the course of the American Revolution.

While the long weekend often ushers in summer fun, Memorial Day is dedicated to honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

In the aftermath of the Civil War, a desire to honor fallen soldiers arose across the United States. Local communities held their own remembrance ceremonies, with freed slaves in Charleston being some of the first to commemorate Union soldiers.

Building on these local traditions, General John A. Logan, leader of a Union veterans group, declared a national Decoration Day in 1868. This day, May 30th, was chosen for its neutrality, not coinciding with any specific Civil War battle. The focus was on decorating graves with flowers, a tradition that stuck.

Though some states quickly recognized Decoration Day as a holiday, it wasn't until after World War I that it became a more inclusive day of remembrance, honoring American military personnel who died in all wars. Finally, in 1971, Congress established Memorial Day as a national holiday on the last Monday of May.

Here are some ways we can continue to honor them:

• Visit a local veteran's cemetery: You can still visit a cemetery in the coming days and place a flag on a grave, or leave a small token of respect.

• Volunteer your time: Many veterans' organizations welcome volunteers throughout the year. You can find opportunities online or by contacting your local chapter.

• Donate to a worthy cause: Consider supporting a charity that assists veterans and their families.

• Express your gratitude: Even a simple "thank you" to a veteran you know can make a difference.

• Anxiety and Depression: The constant threat and uncertainty of war can lead to anxiety and depression, impacting a veteran's mood, sleep, and ability to cope with daily life.

• Moral Injury: Being exposed to acts of violence, cruelty, or inhumanity that go against one’s moral compass can be deeply disturbing and create a sense of powerlessness. Sometimes, soldiers are forced to make difficult choices in combat that may contradict their own moral code. This can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and self-loathing.

Why Silence Hurts

While the battlefield might be silent after the fighting stops, the invisible wounds of war can create a deafening internal struggle for veterans. The silence surrounding these challenges isn't just a personal hurdle, it has a ripple effect that impacts not only veterans but also their families and communities.

When veterans bottle up their experiences, they can become isolated. They may withdraw from social interaction fearing judgment or a lack of understanding. This isolation can exacerbate symptoms like anxiety and depression, creating a vicious cycle. Suppressing emotions can take a physical toll. Studies have shown a link between chronic stress and physical health problems such as heart disease and ulcers.

Family and friends who don't understand the invisible wounds may misinterpret a veteran's behavior. For example, irritability or withdrawal might be seen as a lack of effort or a personality change, leading to conflict and frustration. Veterans themselves may struggle to maintain healthy relationships due to the emotional toll of their experiences.

Silence prevents veterans from seeking the help they need. Early intervention and treatment for mental health conditions like PTSD can significantly improve a veteran's quality of life. The burden of caring for veterans with untreated mental health issues can strain social services, healthcare systems and families.

Margaret Cochran Corbin wasn't your typical camp follower. Sure, she followed her husband John, a Pennsylvania artilleryman, during the Revolutionary War. She cooked, mended clothes, and tended to the wounded alongside other women. But Margaret had a fire in her eyes, a deep well of determination that went beyond wifely duty.

The brutal reality of war hit home on November 16, 1776, at Fort Washington. Eight-thousand Hessian troops, under British command, attacked the 2,800 American soldiers left defending the fort. John, along with his crew, manned one of only two cannons returning fire, a desperate attempt to hold back the enemy advance. As a nurse, Margaret was allowed on the battlefield to act as a medic.

Then, tragedy struck. A British cannonball ripped through John's position. He crumpled to the ground, lifeless. Grief threatened to consume Margaret, but something else flickered within her – a steely resolve. The American line was weakening, and their cannon, now silent, could tip the scales.

Without hesitation, Margaret took her husband's place. She grabbed the ramrod, sweat beaded on her forehead as she wrestled the heavy cannonball down the barrel, her movements fueled by a raw mix of grief and determination.

The cannon roared, a defiant blast against the British onslaught. She repeated the action, ignoring the tremors in her arms and the growing ache in her body.

The Hessians returned fire, musket balls whistling through the air. One found its mark, tearing through Margaret's arm. Blood seeped through her clothing, but she pressed on, a single-minded focus on her duty. Another shot, another searing pain, this time in her chest, and then another, in the jaw.

Margaret collapsed, her body wracked with pain, her vision blurring. Left for dead on the battlefield, she became one of the fallen, a testament to the brutal cost of war. The British-controlled forces took the fort, but Margaret, in her severely-wounded state, was released by the British on parole.

News of her bravery spread like wildfire. Though her injuries left her permanently disabled, Margaret Corbin became a symbol. The first woman to receive a military pension in the United States, she stood as a testament to the unwavering spirit that fueled the fight for freedom.

“Molly Pitcher” was the generic name given to the many women who fought in the American Revolution. Not content with sitting in camp, these women carried ammunition and pitchers of water to cool overheating cannons on the battlefield. Often, they went one step further, operating the cannons after the men stationed there were wounded or killed.

Other notable women from the revolution include Mary Ludwig Hays, who fought in the Battle of Monmouth, and Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man in order to enlist in the army.

Countless women throughout American history have defied expectations, stepping onto battlefields and into war efforts in remarkable ways as “Molly Pitcher.” Their bravery and dedication, though often untold, played a vital role in securing victories. Margaret Cochran's story serves as a powerful reminder that veteran women are not a recent development, but a cornerstone of American military history.

The year is 1932. America is in the throes of the Great Depression. Thousands of World War I veterans, promised a bonus for their service, see their dreams of financial security vanish amidst breadlines and unemployment.

World War I veterans returned home expecting a hero's welcome and a brighter future. Instead, they soon found themselves thrust into a harsh reality. Jobs were scarce, the skills they honed on the battlefield didn't translate well to civilian life, and the promised “bonus payment” for their service seemed like a distant dream – not due until 1945. The economic boom that followed the war fizzled out quickly, leaving many veterans financially strapped. Adding to their woes, the psychological scars of war, then known as “shell shock,” were widespread, with little support available for veterans grappling with depression, anxiety, and nightmares.

The government's lack of assistance stood in stark contrast to the enthusiastic wartime calls to patriotism. The public, too, began to question the government's commitment to the men who had served. By 1932, the Great Depression had piled onto the existing hardships, pushing many WWI veterans to the brink of destitution.

Desperate for financial relief, 17,000 veterans, along with their families and other supporters, descended on Washington D.C. in June. This became known as the Bonus Army in the media of the day, but the group called themselves the Bonus Expeditionary Force. After initially being rebuffed by President Herbert Hoover and the Senate, many of the veterans who had homes returned to them. However, many thousands had nowhere to go, and so they stayed in D.C., and many more thousands arrived to join them.

They camped out in several makeshift shantytowns, their plight capturing national attention and highlighting the government's neglect. One camp was nicknamed “Camp Marks” after a local, friendly police captain. Another was named “Camp Bartlett” for the man who owned the land and permitted the veterans to camp there. The camps were organized and policed by the veterans. They did their best to make sure residents were honorably-discharged veterans and their families, trying to protest legally for their bonus. They reportedly ran out criminals, Communists, and other people not dedicated to their cause. They also organized church services, first aid tents and sanitation regimes. The racial segregation that had held strong, even on the WWI battlefields, began to melt away within the camps. Food was provided by supporters with assistance from the local police, whose chief was a WWI veteran himself.

But the D.C. Commissioners, under prodding from Hoover, had enough of the protest by late July. They felt the Bonus Army was bent on revolution, a threat to national security, and dangerous for the city. On July 28, the Commissioners ordered the police to remove the Bonus Army from partially-demolished, publicly-owned buildings they had occupied inside the city. Bonus Army leaders urged veterans to go peacefully, but some veterans rioted against the officers, leading one to draw his service revolver and shoot into the crowd. Two veterans later died from the gunshot wounds.

That afternoon, President Hoover used the violence as his reason to authorize the Army to move in against the veterans. General Douglas MacArthur, eager to quell what he saw as a revolutionary army, led a force consisting of the 12th Infantry, the 3rd Cavalry (led by George Patton), and a handful of tanks to clear the protestors. As the troops amassed, the veterans believed it was to be a march in their support, and began cheering on the uniformed soldiers. But then bayonets were ordered to be fixed, cavalry sabers drawn, gas masks donned, and the troops ordered to advance on the gathered veterans.

The veterans were driven south across the Anacostia River by prodding blades and tear gas to the large camp at Anacostia Flats. The camp there was on private property, they believed they would be safe there. Hoover issued orders for the Army not to cross the river, but MacArthur, choosing to ignore the order, initiated a further attack and wiped out the larger camp as well. The camp was burned to the ground. Who set the blaze is disputed.

No deaths were reported, but many injuries. Thousands of veterans, many with their families, had nowhere to return to. They were made into refugees in their own country, by their own government.
